You are so right. Having lived in Costa Rica and currently in Spain you would have thought that I would have learned by now, plus my wife reminding me, guess old habits are hard to kick.

I was just back in the US for 3 weeks (1 for work with 2 Spanish people) and 2 for vacation with my Catalan family and they were all blown away by how nice everyone is. Holding doors, saying hello, smiling at my little boy, telling my wife she is pretty and liked her style etc. Two people even gave my son small gifts to remember his time in the US. Complete strangers.

Thanks for taking the time. As someone who just started to write this past year it means more than you may think as I am still petrified to post anything.
